“Mauritius was created first, then paradise”

– Mark Twain

“Mauritius was created first, then paradise”. Rightly praised, this dreamy island in the Indian Ocean is the epitome of luxury vacation and for more than 10,000 couples annually the honeymoon island … to “dare” … But surfer is interested in one thing in addition to dreamy lagoons, adventurous jungle landscapes and lush vegetation – the wind resistance! Trade wind is the magic word here. When summer has arrived north of the equator, Mauritius is in winter.
From a climatic point of view, it couldn’t be better there, with pleasant temperatures of 22-28 degrees, this season of the year in Mauritius is wonderful to bear, it is just not as “muggy hot” as on the European continent and especially in the southwest of the island very windy, because from April to November the constant trade wind belt reaches all the way to Mauritius. Lately, however, changes in the weather have been observed, Mauritius is increasingly developing into a year-round area, our partner Oliver from the German-speaking kite school on site knows to report airswitch.com. For example, in the summer months of December and January there was often above-average wind with some 20 knots.

The wonderful turquoise lagoons with white sandy beaches are well known from the brochures. We surfers are lucky not only to experience this dream scenery from the shore or swimming, but to glide with pleasure over the shimmering shimmering shallow water of the turquoise lagoons and over the reef into the deep blue water of the Indian Ocean to explore the various top wave spots .

Wind and waves for every surfer's heart - best travel time for Mauritius

The best travel time for us windsurfers and kitesurfers with the usually highest wind probability is still from May to October, then it is winter in Mauritius and low season. As previously described (keyword climate / weather change), you can also be lucky with the wind in the other months of the MRU summer. At over 30 degrees in the MRU summer, Lycra weather prevails, while a shorty is usually sufficient. The temperatures on Mauritius in winter there (= summer in our latitudes) still reach a pleasant 22 – 28 degrees, the Mauritius “better summer” is very pleasant to endure, even at night the thermometer rarely drops below 20 degrees. If the beaches in our or European latitudes are really full in midsummer and some kite zones or forbidden zones are set up, you are spot on with the choice of spot Mauritius … It is not for nothing that at this time some professionals spend “the Summertime” to train in Mauritius …

Windsurfing and kitesurfing Mauritius - the spots

The spot for beginners and advanced climbers

Kite lagoon

Finest shallow water with a great panorama right in front of the imposing one Berg Le Brabant is characterized by the huge, deep, beginner lagoon / kite lagoon.

 For beginners and advanced

Little Reef

Break on the small inner reef depending on the swell (1-3 meters) already very nice waves that invite wave beginners and advanced to ride.

In the speed frenzy-For professionals only!

One Eye

One of the fastest Waves of the world can be found on the infamous One Eye . The waves of the One Eye are often mast-high. If you don’t get out in time here, you’ll be mercilessly pulled onto the razor-sharp reef. Professionals Only !!!

Seamless transition to the beginner spot

Shallow water spot

Within the lagoon, at the “point” to the reef , you enjoy beautiful Caribbean water colors. Depending on the wind angle and swell, the flat water is sometimes choppy.

Warning: Experts with wave experience only!

Chameaux

The “Only Expert wave area” connects seamlessly to the Little Reef Chameaux. The waves run faster, stronger and higher than on Little Reef. In addition, depending on the tide level, there is a razor-sharp reef lurking beneath the water surface.

1.5 km outside - preferably never alone and with experience!

Manawa

To the left of the opening of the reef to the open ocean, the channel, is the top wave area Manawa.
Here, too, break Waves 3 – 5 meters or higher depending on the swell. Compared to One Eye, however, the water depth of about 2 meters is an advantage because it does not end a wash cycle directly on the reef. If you don’t drive Manawa too far in the direction of the windward lane, you can get off to Lee quite quickly. Watch out for stones in the water at windward!
The Manawa wave runs very clean and slowly breaking, but you should bring some wave experience.
IMPORTANT: Never surf here alone!
Manawa is approx. 1.5 km from the beach. The current in the “Pas de Prairie” mercilessly pulls onto the open sea , especially with high swell. You should therefore start this excursion in a group or at least in pairs.

Surf and Kite Safety

Surf and Kite safe
Mauritius is a wonderful wind and kitesurfing area and one of the most versatile ever. Please note the safety regulations. There have been accidents here, mainly due to carelessness and overestimation of themselves. At or behind the reef, especially with strong swell and then associated currents, you should be careful. Rescue is often difficult due to the shallow depth of the reef. Also inform you on site about the area conditions, e.g. B. at the local wind and kitesurfing stations.

Wind and kite surfing stations

We recommend the German-language kit center Airswitch from Oliver. The kite center has a mobile kite station at the spot Le Morne. We are happy to recommend school, rental, barbecue and downwinders. We would be happy to make contact for you as part of the apartment booking.

Spot alternatives

Spot alternatives
If the trade wind is eastbound, the Bel Ombre spot, 20 minutes away, or the beautiful lagoon Blue Bay / Pointe D’Esny, near the airport, is ideal. You drive about an hour from Le Morne. A huge amount of space, shallow water and fantastic water colors make your surfer’s heart beat faster.
The entrance to the beach is a little more difficult to find. It is best to ask us briefly, we will be happy to explain the way to you.

You can easily spend several thousand euros on luxury hotels in Mauritius. For us frequent surfers there are very cheap alternatives. We simply rent a cheap SURF apartment near the spot. You can book more equipment and better locations from € 40 (incl. 2 people). For many years SURF-FEWO in Mauritius has built up a network with local landlords in La Gaulette and Le Morne. We know a lot of accommodations there personally and would be happy to arrange these accommodations for you – at the best price, first-hand, directly from the landlord.

La Gaulette und Le Morne

The small village of La Gaulette has so far been spared from package tourism. Here you live authentically, locally and inexpensively, away from the 5-star luxury hotels, in fine apartments or holiday apartments. Some of them have beautiful sea views of the offshore island of Le Benetiers, also known as Coconut Island, and the turquoise lagoons of the Indian Ocean.

Shopping for self-catering

Self-sufficiency is absolutely no problem in Mauritius, you get almost everything that is available here in the supermarket range; also the accessories for a cozy barbecue on the apartment terrace in the evening.
There is a large self-catering supermarket in La Gaulette. There is another one in the next larger town, Tamarin.
